San Francisco (CNN Business) Apple will pay up to half a billion dollars to settle a lawsuit accused of slowing down older iPhone models. Thus, the company could force users to buy new ones.

The proposed settlement agreement demands Apple (AAPL) to pay owners of certain iPhone models $ 25 for each injured device, which goes for a total of $ 310 million to $ 500 million. The numbers are taken from documents published on Friday in the US District Court in San Jose (California). “The amount that each user receives can increase or decrease depending on how many claims will be filed, as well as on additional court fees and expenses approved by the court,” the document says.

The settlement, which must be approved by the judge on April 3, concludes the legal struggle, which lasts more than two years, as Apple tried to mitigate the global backlash.

In December 2017, the company admitted that it used software updates to slow down the old iPhone, shortly after angry customers and technical analysts noted that the updates were causing performance degradation. It was suggested that Apple did this to force users to upgrade phones to the latest iPhone model. The company gave a different explanation — the software update was aimed at solving problems with old lithium-ion batteries, which would make the phones turn off urgently to protect components.

Apple later apologized and offered a replacement battery to its customers for a price of $ 79, which it reduced to $ 29 in January 2018. Company CEO Tim Cook , a year later, admitted that revenue for 2018 was partly influenced by “a significant reduction in iPhone battery replacement prices .”

IPhone users in the United States may file complaints if they owned devices: iPhone 6 , 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, or SE, purchased before December 21, 2017.
